Walmart Price Book

When I first started the Walmart Price Book Page, I was really convinced that the generic brand (Great Value) is most of the time cheaper.  After completing the first price book in July, my theory seemed to be true.  Now I know I was going to update the price list in August and I did not get to because we were out of town, so I went yesterday and checked prices. I know that prices fluctuate and I expected a small change in prices but I certainly did not expect what I found out!  Just to name a few changes, we had eggs go from $1.18 to $1.74, Great Value dinner rolls from $1.38 to $2.26!, and all of the produce is up a good bit which is normal but not the prices that I saw!  Now, I will say that there are still some cheap items, but let me just put in a plug for the supermarkets.  You know that the produce and meat at the supermarkets have a great quality.  The meat prices at Walmart remained pretty low. Here are the prices that I found for meat that looked pretty cheap (Don't foget about the quality):
  • Boneless, skinless chicken breasts - $1.78 (you can often get the Tyson at Kroger for $1.98 or even cheaper)
  • Ground Chuck Roll - $10.00 (found just as cheap at Kroger)
  • Gwaltney Sausage - $1.92 for a 1 lb. pkg. (name brand will go on sale quite often)
  • Pork Roast - $1.98 lb. (Publix had the same price a few weeks ago as well)
Why am I telling you all of this? For all of you that believe Walmart Great Value is cheaper (I was one of you too, lol), I am convinced that even if there are a few Great Value items cheaper, you will not get the quality that you would at a supermarket (let alone the customer service).  Plus, you know when you get in there, it is like a vaccuum cleaner in your wallet and you will end up buying something else that you do not really need :~)  Don't deny it... we all do it and I am sure you have too! You go in to buy a few odd and end things and you end up spending $50 or more!

With this being said, I will no longer be posting a Walmart Staples list on the weekly menu.  There will still be a staples list of items that are needed but not on sale, but in my opinion, if an item is not on sale you will come out fine purchasing the store brand.  It will balance out.  I am going to try to get the off brand prices for Kroger on some staple items so that I can get a good estimate of how much each meal will cost each week and how much you will have to spend.   I will be posting great dinner item deals from Publix.  I have found that by picking up a few items here and there each week that are super cheap, I am only having to pick up a handful of items from the weekly menu grocery list in order to have all seven dinners.

Don't foget that you can snag some great deals on cleaning supplies at CVS, Walgreens or Rite Aid.  Publix will run BOGO (buy one get one free) on different cleaning supplies most of the time and you can often find a manufacturer coupon that can be stacked with a Publix coupon.  The Green Advantage Buy Flyer and other Publix coupon booklets can be found in either the front of the store or at customer service.  Just ask and you shall receive.
